A United Republican party supporter was found with a copy of fake voters register with names of registered voters. Turkana West OCPD Jonathan Ngala said they had arrested the suspect In Lokichogio Turkana West constituency and impounded the fake register.
“We have arrested him with a fake voter register. He is in our custody and we will soon arraign him in court,” Mr Ngala said.
Coordinator Thomas Ngetich said voting could be delayed due to technical hitches. Mr Ngetich also noted the inability by polling clerks to operate the machines, forcing officials to hold urgent basic training on the same, delaying the process.
He added that although the challenges have delayed the process, IEBC officials were hopeful that the exercise would be successful. Marakwet East Constituency IEBC coordinator Peter Tiyo said more than 50 polling stations in the region had resorted to the use of manual registers to conduct the exercise. “The highest number of voters in one of the polling stations in this constituency is over 2000 voters. This means that using the manual register will slow down the whole process, but we must ensure that everyone who turns up participates in the exercise,” Mr Tiyo said.
In Keiyo North Constituency, voters turned up in large numbers with long queues being witnessed in most polling centres.
The process was quite slow with IEBC officials attributing the delays to inconveniencies caused by machines. County Returning Officer Dorothy Mibei said lack of electricity in some polling centres contributed to major interference.
