Clubs To Decide On Margaret Thatcher’s Tribute.

There was no minute of silence for Margaret Thatcher, the famed British PM who died in the Monday night derby between Manchester United and Manchester City. This rather “awkward” situation came on the heels of the Premier League’s insistence that various clubs should be left to decide on the tribute to be paid to the late Prime Minister. The Football League has adopted the same stance and this implies that the FA Cup semifinals due to take place at London’s Wembley Stadium this weekend may or may not start with a tribute . The Football Association is also reported to have no plans of marking Thatcher’s passing on.

Conservative Party politician Thatcher was Britain’s first female prime minister from 1979- 1990 and won three successive general elections but was not a popular figure among football fans as her distaste for the national sport was a well-documented fact.

Her plans to eradicate hooliganism by introducing a controversial identity card scheme were deeply unpopular with football fans, culminating with the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 . She was also blamed for destroying traditional industries in northern towns and cities, home to many of England’s football clubs.
Margaret Thatcher died on Monday, April 8, 2013 at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke
