Residents of Vihiga County in Western Kenya broke to dance and celebrations on Saturday, after Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the fourth President of Kenya by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Although many said they did not vote for him, the residents received the news with neutrality with many expressing optimism in his leadership.

“The people of Kenya have spoken and whether they voted for a President who lost, it is our turn now to trust in the leadership of the one who has been elected,” said Samuel Magare, a teacher in Vihiga constituency.

“If he can lead the country well without favouring one region over the other, we accept his leadership fully,” another businessman said.

The residents also expressed confidence that the President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta would fulfill the promises he made during his campaigns.

“We hope for the best to come from him bearing in mind he is still young and energetic to take this great country to another level,”Mama Margret Kadenyeka, a farmer said. ‘

On Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi conceded defeat having seen that he could not win the election.

Mudavadi who comes from Vihiga County has been praised by locals, terming his move as brave and patriotic.

“Mudavadi has done what many Luhyas have failed to do in the past, which is a show of his strength and humility. He will be ready to rule the country come 2017!” said senator elect George Khaniri who is a close confidante of Musalia Mudavadi.
