As the second much awaited Presidential debate on Monday fast approaches, Kiswahili scholars have now come to the fore demanding the use of Kiswahili language in the debate.
In their petition to the organizers of the debate, the scholars termed the previous debate as biased since it locked out many Kenyans who do not understand English language.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Prof. Clara Momanyi a lecturer at CUEA wondered who the debate was meant for considering that majority of Kenyans do not understand English.
He criticized the politicians for being hypocrites by asking votes in Kiswahili and resort to addressing issues affecting the very voters in English, the language majority do not understand. The same concern was echoed by Kithaka wa Mberia, a lecturer at University of Nairobi.
The scholars have vowed to go to court to force the government to recognize Kiswahili if their demands are not met saying the constitution recognizes Kiswahili as the first National language.
But Mr. Wachira Waruru of Royal Media Services and the Chairman of the Presidential debate assured the scholars that their concerns were genuine and that they are working on modalities on how they can factor Kiswahili Language in the debate. Earlier, Mombasa elders petitioned the organizers of the debate over the same concerns.
