Protest has rocked a location in Marsabit District following the killing of a widow and her two children.

Residents and leaders of Hula-Hula, about five kilometres from Marsabit County headquarters yesterday protested the killings, saying the area had become a killing field where 12 people have died in just 11 months.
Arille Nayapa, a village elder, said four armed men attacked Sakayo Galwabo’s?homestead at around 7pm while she lounged outside with three of her children. Nayapa said one of the attackers sprayed the family members with bullets. Three children survived the attack as they were in the kitchen cooking.

“One child died on the spot while Sakayo and the another child died while undergoing treatment at Marsabit District Hospital,’’ said Hula-Hula Assistant Chief Charity Gabanaye.

Mrs Gabanaye identified the primary school pupils as Dibayo Bagajo, 9, and Barrack Galwabo, 5. A third child, Stella Galwabo, 15, was shot on both legs and abdomen. She was moved from Marsabit District Hospital to Kijabe Mission Hospital for specialised treatment.?

Stole nothing

Peter Leruk, a family friend and an aspirant for Saku?Parliamentary seat, said the gangsters spent over 20 bullets to attack the family, adding that they did not steal anything from the homestead.

“They came from the direction of Mt Marsabit forest, executed the family members and went back the same way,’’ said Mr Leruk.

Marsabit County Commissioner Isaiah Nakoru described the incident as ‘criminal, isolated and puzzling’, adding initial investigation ruled out politics and inter-clan based conflict.

He said a suspect, an ex-General Service Unit officer who is an in-law of the dead woman, had been arrested and was helping the police with investigation.
