I Did Not Orchestrate Mau Evictions, Says Raila Odinga

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has exonerated himself from accusations that he orchestrated the Mau evictions.

Mr Odinga over the weekend stated that the resolution to have the settlers removed from the expansive Mau complex was passed by cabinet and was approved by Members of Parliament.

“It is only that the supervision and coordination of the exercise at the time fell under my docket but this does not mean that I mooted the idea,” he noted.

Rift valley residents, he pointed out, supported him overwhelmingly in his bid for the presidency in the year 2007 and would have been the last man to make them suffer.

Mr Odinga said the matter was in the past and what remained now was for Kenyans to uphold peaceful co-existence so as to build a united and healthy nation devoid of tribalism.

He spoke at Chesinendet Primary School grounds in Kipkelion East constituency, Kericho County during the burial service of Mzee Paul Kipruto Tirop. The late Tirop was the father of Bomet governor Isaac Ruto.

GENERAL ELECTION

Mr Odinga was reacting to sentiments raised by Kuresoi MP Zakayo Cheruiyot and his Kipkelion East counterpart Joseph Limo that residents in Rift valley did not support his quest for the presidency during the last general election as a result of his alleged role in the exercise.

The Kuresoi MP said issues of land were emotive and sensitive and that he had forewarned the former premier over the same.

Mr Odinga at the same time petitioned members of the county assembly nationwide not fight governors and senators and instead work with them if they expected meaningful development to be realised in their wards.

He also urged the county assembly representatives not to fight so much for increased salaries and allowances but instead ask themselves how best can they serve their electorates.
