Late Olympian Wanjiru's Manager Too Secretive on His Deals, Says Lawyer

A lawyer Wednesday demanded that all contracts signed by Olympic marathon gold medallist Samuel Kamau Wanjiru prior to his death be revealed to his family.

Mr Ndegwa Wahome, who represents the family, said it had been difficult getting the runner’s Italian manager Federico Rosa to reveal details of the contract the runner had with American sportswear makers Nike.

Life insurance
Mr Wahome, who is the Speaker of the Nyandarua County Assembly, said the athlete had told him before he died that he was entitled to an annual payment and expected Sh12 million a month.

“The contract with Nike has remained a secret and the manager has not allowed us to see it,” Mr Wahome told hundreds of people who attended the anniversary of the athlete’s death at his farm at Gatimu village.

Mr Wahome urged the Kenyan embassy in Italy to compel Mr Rosa to disclose information about any contract the athlete could have signed.

“Does it mean Kamau did not have life insurance cover in case he died or was injured while running?” he asked.

He claimed Mr Rosa had withheld Sh2 million that was meant to cover legal and other expenses when the athlete was charged with illegal gun possession in Nyahururu.

Mr Wahome said Wanjiru’s children and wife Trizah Njeri needed money for survival and the Sh2 million could be of help.

He said though an administrator of the estate was yet to be named, but his children should not suffer.

The lawyer, however, assured that all the athlete’s investments were safe.

Wanjiru died on May 15, 2011 in unclear circumstances, with police claiming he fell from the balcony of his house at Muthaiga estate in Nyahururu town.

The athlete’s mother, Ms Hannah Wanjiru, was conspicuously absent.
