Mandela's Grandchildren Start Legal Fight Over His Estate

CHIEF Mandla Mandela yesterday sought to distance himself from a legal challenge launched by his sisters Makaziwe and Zenani over his grandfather's money.

This despite court documents indicating the Qunu-based chief and parliamentarian supports the application.

In the application filed at the Johannesburg High Court, the sisters seek to remove lawyers George Bizos and Bally Chuene - who both acted for former president Nelson Mandela in the past - as well as Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale as directors of two companies which hold "tens of millions of rands" of Madiba's money.

They further seek to remove the trio's names as directors from the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) registry.

They accuse Bizos, Chuene and Sexwale of unlawfully appointing themselves as directors of the two companies, saying the three men refuse to distribute the millions to Madiba's grandchildren - and list Mandla as one of 17 of the former president's children and grandchildren in support of the application.

However, in a statement yesterday, Mandla denied knowledge of the application as well as his part in it.

"I want to put it on record that I am neither aware of this court application nor supportive of it. There are ways that the family handles these kinds of private matters and I believe that resorting to the courts is not the correct route to take.

"To date I have not been part of any family meeting convened to discuss this matter and therefore disassociate myself from the court application decision," he said.

" I have never signed any sworn affidavit calling for the removal of (Bizos, Chuene and Sexwale)."

His denial is contradicted by a document which shows that he signed over power of attorney to lawyer Ismail Ayob on May 30 last year.

Ayob said Mandla signed the document in his office, with two employees acting as witnesses.

"He signed it in my presence. He filled in his ID number. He signed his address."

However, Mandla's spokes-man Freddy Pilusa last night said: "He (Mandla) says the power of attorney related to a different matter, the Makgatho Trust. He did not know it would be used to make an application to remove anyone as director of any company." - Sowetan.
