At least nine people were killed and four more seriously injured after a matatu collided head-on with a truck on Thursday morning near Murang'a Teachers College along Nairobi - Nyeri road.

According to Murang'a South Police boss Anthony Onyango, the matatu was ferrying passengers from Kenol town to Nyeri during the 7:30am incident.

Mr Onyango said preliminary investigations shows that the matutu driver lost control of the vehicle and swerved to the opposite lane resulting into the accident.

“The matatu driver might have attempted to overtake a vehicle but lost control occasioning the head-on collision,” he said.

He said the drivers of both vehicles and some passengers died on impact.

He also cautioned drivers against speeding saying fatal accidents could be avoided if road users become more responsible.

“Speeding has become a major problem especially on this smooth and straight stretch of the road and drivers must be careful,” he said.
