Counties ‘lack money’ for renovating Governor offices

County headquarters are grappling with poor office furnishing and lack of transport for governors-elect, the Constitution Implementation Commission (CIC) has said.
CIC commissioner Kamotho Waiganjo Thursday said the amount of money allocated to the counties by the National Transition Authority was only enough for basic setting up of offices.
He said no money had been allocated for renovations before the swearing in of the governors and asked the counties to prepare their budget estimates fast.
“The local authorities should have made their budget estimates to help the counties hit the ground running, which would be included in the national budget,” he said.
He asked the governors-elect to speed up the budget- making process.
Mr Waiganjo said the accommodation for governors was not an urgent matter during the transition because the 2012/2013 budget did not provide for it.
“The transition authority funds allocated for this is Sh2 million for the ceremony on assumption of office and Sh2 million to set up offices,” he said.
Speaking during an open forum in Nyeri, Mr Waiganjo said governors have to get their priorities right in view of revenue shortfall, adding that the national budget preparations were being finalised and that the budget estimates will be presented in April. -Business Daily Africa
