Six people including the proprietor of a club in Thika town have been arrested in connection to the November death of former Juja MP George Thuo.

The six were arrested on Friday after long investigations by detectives from CID headquarters showed Thuo was poisoned. Police involved in the probe said yesterday the suspects are expected in court tomorrow to face murder charges.

CID director Ndegwa Muhoro confirmed there were arrests in connection with the death.

“I am informed there are arrests over the death of the former MP and some of them will appear in court on Monday. I will get more details,” said Mr Muhoro.

Detectives from CID headquarters led by the Director of Investigations Samuel Nyabengi have been investigating the November 17 incident. They took over from their Thika counterparts after there emerged complaints from the family.

Also in custody is a friend to the late Thuo who had arrived at the club and two bar attendants, police said. The club’s proprietor was identified as Paul Wainaina.

They were all being detained at the Muthaiga and Runda police stations ahead of the arraignment. The murder theory came out after post-mortem showed he was poisoned.

“There were traces of a pesticide poison in his liver and heart which prompted this theory. There is a likelihood this poisoning was premeditated,” said one officer. Pathologist Dr Peter Ndegwa and Dr Andrew Gachie conducted the postmortem.

Thuo died at the club in Thika as he watched Formula One. Wainaina, a close friend said, Thuo had called him at around 5pm and sought to know when the race would start. Mr Wainaina said then when he went to his club after 7pm he found Thuo and another friend taking a drink.

“I joined them at their table but after a short while Thuo started to complain he was feeling extremely hot and wanted to remove his T-shirt,” he said. “I told him to go to my office and remove it. About 15 minutes after he returned he collapsed and hit the table but we supported him,” he said they took him to Thika Nursing Home.

Thuo ventured into politics in 2007 when he captured the Juja parliamentary seat on a PNU ticket. He rose to become the Grand Coalition’s chief whip in the Tenth Parliament.
