Mr. Patrick Mwaniki’s appointment to NHIF is rejected by KMA

A crisis is looming in the Kenya’s National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) following the recent appointment of Mr. Patrick Mwaniki as the fund’s Chairman.

Mwaniki’s appointment has sparked controversy between the NHIF and the Kenya Medical Association (KMA), with the latter strongly opposing the appointment due to integrity issues with Mr. Mwaniki. KMA has already written a protest letter to the Head of Civil Service, Francis Kimemia to reject the appointment.

According to KMA led by its Secretary Henry Wanga, the association accused Mr. Mwaniki of failing to pay a statutory retention fee or Private Practice License Fee to the Medical Practitioner and Dentist Board (MPDB) since 2007 despite several  reminders.

On their part, MPDB through its Chairman Mr. George Mgoha is accusing Mr. Mwaniki for operating as a doctor illegally after failing to appear before Health and Fitness Committee on September 12, 2009 for scrutiny.

They now want the Francis Kimemia and Anyang Nyong’o to rescind the appointment and recruit a new funds manager with integrity in line with Chapter Six of the Constitution.
