Police in Githunguri have arrested three people in connection with the death of Lower Yatta DC James Hungi.

On Tuesday, Githunguri police boss Wilkister Vera said they are interrogating the three suspects arrested following a tip off from wananchi.

The DC, who was found dead on Sunday morning at St Joseph High School in Githunguri, is believed to have been killed by a gang that had raided the institution at around 3am.

Ms Vera said the suspected robbers could have stolen Hungi’s Ceska pistol. Police said they have confiscated mobile phones from the suspects and are investigating whether the phones belong to the watchmen at the school.

Vera said the gang had already broken into the principal’s office, where they made away with two computers, when they killed Hungi.
While they were ransacking other offices, they spotted Hungi at the gate as he drove out of the compound.

“He had gone to visit a friend and he was leaving at that time. He hooted at the gate, but the watchmen did not come so he got out of the car to check on them and that was when part of the gang that was keeping vigil at the gate attacked him with machetes,” Vera said.
