The ODM Elections Board has given a direct nomination to Otieno Okanja for the Siaya County governor seat after his two main ODM opponents for the seat - Dr Oburu Odinga and William Oduol were disqualified. William Oduol had on Friday announced he won the nomination. The returning officer in Siaya later on Friday declare Oburu Odinga, the Assistant Minister for finance and Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s brother the winner.
The elections board later cancelled the results announced by the returning officer, saying she did not follow the party’s procedure in announcing the winner.
Okanja, a career banker who appeared to have emerged third in the nominations, will now be the ODM flag bearer for the hotly contested seat that led to demonstrations in the county over the weekend.
