Man is BURIED alive at building site

A man died when he was buried by soil from a foundation trench he and his colleagues were digging in Westlands, Nairobi.

Another person inside the hole, about 15 feet deep, escaped with injuries while another was unhurt.

It took about four hours for Kenya Red Cross Society staff and construction workers to locate the body and remove it from the hole, on Thursday.

Mr Joshua Ndeko, a survivor, said he and two others were to lay the ground for a foundation. “I saw the wall collapsing and I immediately ran to the other side. I was fortunate because only my legs got buried,” he said while holding back tears following the loss of a colleague.

Mr Daniel Mutinda, a Red Cross official said it was drizzling when loose soil fell on the construction workers as they were digging.

“We have started to issue alerts in areas prone to landslides because of the onset of heavy rains. We have issued alerts in Marakwet, Murang’a, Coast and Western Kenya,” he said.

Mr Jacob Mbithi, a survivor, was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital. “I asked my friend, who died in the incident, whether someone was walking near us and throwing some soil at us. Even before he could answer, the walls caved in but I was lucky to be buried from my legs to my chest,” he recalled.

A sombre mood engulfed the construction site after the 9am incident as workers downed their tools to help recover the body. -Standard digital
