Nairobi City Surveillance System Launched

Nairobi Central Business District and its environs will have an integrated urban surveillance system by February 2013 that will monitor traffic and crime in the city.

Nairobi Metropolitan Minister Jamleck Kamau says phase one of the project will cover all 51 traffic lights controlled junctions and crime spots within the CBD and its environs in a bid to reduce crime and control traffic.

He was speaking Tuesday during the launch of the 437 million shillings project.

As a way of congesting roundabouts, phase one of the multi million project will involve identifying speeding vehicles and those that do not observe traffic lights and commit any traffic offense by capturing the happenings at all the 51 junctions and bus stations.

The project comes amidst a wave of grenade attacks within the CBD that remain unsolved for lack of evidence.

All major bus stations will have security camera locations to monitor crime. The system comes after the government recently proposed traffic rules that if implemented will  put traffic violators on notice with some of the world's harshest traffic laws all in a bid of preventing crime and restoring sanity on the streets of Nairobi.
