The flamboyant Nairobi lawmaker said he is willing to negotiate with the MRC lawyers if the group promises to preach peace.
Speaking on phone on Tuesday, Sonko said insecurity at Coast is affecting tourism and scaring away investors.
“Most of my constituents form part of the domestic tourists and schools tour Mombasa. It is only prudent that a solution is found to ensure that there is peace in the region,” the MP said.
Sonko said five primary schools from Makadara have toured the Coast since radical Islamic cleric Sheikh Aboud Rogo was killed and when the MRC attacks were instigated.
“It was my task as their MP to ensure their safety and protection. That is when the idea for me to support the group came into mind,” Sonko added.
The MP, who is a close ally of Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, said MRC should not take law into their hands but seek legal means to fight for their rights.
Five MRC officials including chairman Mwamnuadzi, Secretary General Randu Nzai, treasurer Omar Suleiman Babu and spokesman Rashid Mraja are at Shimo La Tewa prison.
The officials have been unable to raise the required Sh 3 million bond. If Sonko is to bail out the MRC chiefs he will need to fork out over Sh 10 million from his pocket!
