The students went on rampage after the body was discovered in Mabungo just outside Sirimba campus. The student was attacked and his laptop, phone and money stolen by goons outside the institution.
Soon afterwards, more than 5000 students started demonstrating, temporarily closing Kisumu-Busia road.
Police from the Maseno and Luanda Police Stations were forced to shoot in the air and lob teargas canisters, in efforts to disperse them.
“They have lit bonfires on the road and burnt a shop,” said a student who sought anonymity.
Mr George Ojuondo, the institution’s Director of Public Relations and Marketing Director refuted reports of any student having died.
“One male student sustained deep cuts as suspected goons attacked them. He is being treated and is out of danger,” said Mr Ojuondo.
He said some locals have been attacking students in the recent past and robbing them of their property. As a result, the students decided to revenge resulting to the confrontation.
The students are now demonstrating the state of insecurity and lack of accommodation in the institution which has forced students to go live outside the campus.
On Saturday, one female student was raped in the same area.
