Wednesday 3rd October 2012- A street boy was a hero yesterday after saving the lives of two among four children caught in a fire that engulfed a house in Eldoret Huruma estate.
Of the two the street boy saved was an eight month infant only identified as Sheldon.
“I saw fire razing down the house as I was passing by. People were scared to help the children that were screaming inside the house, but I gathered courage and helped them,” said Kiprotich the street boy.
He said that the children that died in the inferno ran towards the kitchen when the fire began, leaving behind the eight month baby lying at the living room.
“One of the children who died was from the neighborhood and she had come to play with her colleagues as they always do. Little did she know that this would happen,” said Mr John Alekhwa, a caretaker.
Mr Alekhwa said that they could not immediately establish the cause of the fire but it's suspected that the children might have played with matchsticks, eventually causing the fire.
According to him, one of the children died in the house as another one died on the way to hospital.
The incident happened at 3pm when their parents were at work.
