Last week, a woman and two men were arrested and arraigned in court for supporting a wedding between two minors, a 16 year old standard eight girl and 17 year old shamba boy.
During the first court session the woman who is alleged to be the guardian to the orphaned girl pleaded guilty of the charges but yesterday changed her plea claiming she did not know the magnitude of the charges.
The court heard that the woman had arranged the wedding between the two minors after the orphaned girl fell pregnant. The boy admitted to being responsible for the pregnancy though was forced to marry off the girl by the adults responsible.
The prosecutor said that the woman will be facing the charges of failing to protect the girl as her legal guardian leading to her pregnancy and arranging marriage between minors which is unconstitutional. She was released on a cash bond of Sh. 100,000 and a case hearing set for September 28.
The shamba boy was also in court facing separate charges of sexually assaulting a minor. He was released on a cash bond of Sh. 100,000.
The two elderly men, Habel Muthui and John Mwangi are facing separate charges of supporting the traditional marriage.
