In March an elderly woman in
Machakos noted that her M-pesa balance was low and a message came in that she
had withdrawn money. Alarmed she called Safaricom customer care and a statement
was issued and it showed that her money was withdrawn at a region she has never
stepped in.
Stephen Wambua the son to the elderly woman said that the Sh.
3000 was never returned as she was asked to call the person who withdrew the
money and they negotiate the
return. She tried explaining that the money was withdrawn from her phone but to no avail.
return. She tried explaining that the money was withdrawn from her phone but to no avail.
Question is how would any one call the person who withdrew your
money from your phone number and at a different region as you live. Strange as
it looked Wambua took the initiative to call Safaricom and was directed to
report the matter to police officers who could handle the case better.
Wambua and other clients who have suffered the same can still
not understand how someone would withdraw money from your phone and in another
region yet you are holding your phone at hand.
