Sunday, September 02, 2012 - “Tunarudi kufanya revenge, sisi ni wale mlifukuza” (we are coinge back to revenge, we are the ones you chased away)

This message in slang Swahili has been making rounds at Kagumo and Kabonge villages in Kirinyaga County and they are alleged to be circulated by the outlawed mungiki sect members in the area. The message has brought panic in the area as residents relive the past-years-encounter with the sect members.

Three years ago blood was poured in the area after a vigilante group had a severe confrontation with the sect members leading to the death of tens of people. Apparently the war between the community policing group andmungiki consummated when the sect members started killing the members of the policing group.

Armed police officers and the vigilante group however managed to chase out all the sect members and cowed some of them into hiding. The outlawed Mungiki sect made a comeback in the beginning of the year and has declared war in various regions.

In Kirinyaga County police and the vigilante group have however declared that the sect members will not cow them down and they will make sure they wipe them out of their land.

The group chairman said they have reorganized their group and together with armed police officers they are patrolling the area day and night to ensure safety in the area.

Kirinyaga County Commissioner Joseph Keter said they will be holding meetings with the community to ensure security prevails. He further added that residents should not panic as he has assured them of a round the clock vigilance.
