Striking doctors now want the Director of Medical Services Francis Kimani sacked.

They have also called for stern action against the Medical Services PS Mary Ngare and the human resource boss.

The doctors issued the fresh demands through their union after a follow up meeting scheduled for on Friday failed to take off.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPPDU) claimed that politics has now taken centre stage even as they made good progress during a meeting with Medical Services Minister Anyang’ Nyong’o.

“We made considerable progress in the first meeting we held with the minister on Thursday. We were to have a follow up meeting on Friday but apparently these officers phones are off,” said KMPPPDU chairman Victor Ngani.

He said the union has now resolved that no further meetings will take place with Dr Kimani in office.

“We have come to learn that some senior officials at the ministry do not want the strike to end. We will press on with the strike even till the next government comes in next year,” he said.

On Wednesday Prof Nyong’o said the Government will employ 1,000 medical officers and clinicians to replace the striking doctors.

But KMPPDU officials dismissed the move, warning it would result to more damage.

The Government published adverts for vacancies in the affected hospitals in local daillies on Thursday.

He said the move was occasioned by the striking medics. “We have no option but to employ additional 1,000 medical officers to fill the gaps of those who have refused to go back to work,” said Nyong’o.
