Kenya's most prolific author, Marjorie Oludhe Macgoye is dead. She passed on Monday, at her home in Ngara at 87 years of age.

“It is very saddening to lose her after Margaret Ogolla, Grace Ogot and Asenath Odanga,” PEN Kenya Centre president Khainga O’Okwemba said.

Marjorie was born in Southampton, England, in 1928, but later moved to Kenya as a missionary bookseller in 1954. She married D.G.W. Macgoye in 1960.

She has written several novels, poetry, and children’s stories including Freedom Song and Song for the unborn dead.

She was also the author of Coming to Birth, which won the Sinclair Prize for fiction in 1986 and Homing In, which was second in the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature in 1985.

May her soul rest in peace.
