Former Street Boy Scores A in KCSE Exam

A former street boy at St Luke’s High School in Kimilili, Bungoma county scaled against all odds to score a mean score of A plain in last year’s KCSE exam. Derrick Khaemba, an orphan, was rescued from the streets of Bungoma and rehabilitated by a local non-governmental organisation which has been funding his education with the help of some European organisations. The school produced two plain As in the exam whose results were announced by EducationCabinet secretary Jacob Kaimenyi on Monday.

Focal Advocacy for Children and Teenagers director David Lupao said he picked the boy after he fled his grandmother’s home in Bokoli, Webuye West Constituency and adopted the street life when his parents passed on.

“My organisation has been educating the boy since primary and proceeded to secondary, we are proud that he hasperformed well and we are now asking well-wishers to come in and sponsor his university education,” said Lupao.

He said his NGO has been helping children and teenagers pursue their education despite the financial challenges they face as some of the NGO partners delay in sending funds. Khaemba received the good news of his performance through a phone call from the school but unfortunately had no fare to get to the institution, and had to hitch a ride there. “I thank God for my good performance. I had put in a lot of efforts in my studies and expected good results but not this much.

“My humble background greatly inspired me to work extra hard. I am happy to finally reap the fruits of hard work and discipline,” he said. Khaemba said being an Electrical engineer is his dream and hopes to pursue this at the university in funds allow. St Luke’s Kimilili Principal Patrick Wandili said the performance was encouraging and called on the current registered class to pursue their studies with seriousness to even perform better next year.

Wandili heaped praise on his former student saying his good performance did not come as a surprise to him. “He is a disciplined student and was serious with his studies. I told him before he sat for his exams that he would get an A, and that has come to pass,” said Wandili. “We are optimistic of defeating giants like Friends School Kamusinga, Lugulu girls, and Teremi in Bungoma county next year and are working hard to become position one,” said the principal.
