Police have impounded two lorries ferrying about 400 goats and sheep suspected to have been stolen from rustling-prone East Pokot and Baringo North districts.
The two lorries are suspected to have been ferrying the livestock from Amaya and Kagir areas in East Pokot and Baringo North districts respectively and were headed to Mogotio area in Rongai district for slaughter.
Police in the area, acting on information from the locals, yesterday laid an ambush and intercepted the lorries and arrested five suspects in connection with livestock theft.
Area OCPD Omondi Musewe told The Standard the two lorries, were impounded at around 8.30pm ferrying the livestock along Tangulbei-Loruk area.
Flouting rule
“It was around 4pm when we were informed that there were two lorries that were suspected to be carrying a flock of sheep and goats. We sent our officers there, who then amounted a road block and the two lorries were intercepted at around 8pm at night,” said Musewe.
He said the first vehicle was ferrying 120 goats and sheep while the second one had about 300 goats and sheep which were being transported illegally.
The OCPD said the provincial administration had banned the issuance of livestock transport permit from February to the end of March hence the transporters were flouting the rule. “Issuance of livestock permits had been banned till the end of March and that’s why we suspect the animals were stolen,”said Musewe.
Musewe called on residents to visit the police station and see if they could identify the livestock as the suspects were taken to court to answer stock-theft charges. -Standard Digital
