Kenyan singer Sasha McCarthy has released a single dedicated to the victims of the Westgate Mall siege in Nairobi. Sasha says she released the song, titled “Amuka”, to unite the Kenyan people in love and encourage them in the midst of the tragedy.Says Sasha: “My inspiration to write and compose music comes from God and people. I love people and regardless of the current state our world is in, I have hope in Humanity. I believe in using the gifts that I was given to bless and serve others. When I woke up and saw the story in the news; like most Kenyans, I was trying to wrap my head around the matter. Then I saw the pictures, pictures of people, children, running frightened in a place I used to frequent on a warm Saturday afternoon just to grab a coffee, or walk through the stores like most of them did. It pierced like a knife. I was in despair. I called my sister and the tears just overwhelmed our conversation. There was nothing I could do so I started to play (the keyboard) and God blessed me with a tune meant solely for one purpose and one purpose only, to unite the Kenyan people in love. This song is meant to encourage Kenya to do what she does best, rise above the circumstances and show the world that our spirit and love for each other cannot be shot down. They cannot erase us! Like always, we will overcome!”
