Kenya native Prof Makau Mutua was yesterday appointed by New York governor Andrew M. Cuomo to a commission to investigate public corruption in the New York State government.

Prof Mutua, Dean of the University of Buffalo Law School, where he is also a SUNY Distinguished Professor, will be one of 25 members of the commission that will be tasked with probing “systemic public corruption and the appearance of such corruption in state government, political campaigns and elections in New York State,” said Gov Cuomo. The commission will also have the power to subpoena and examine witnesses under oath as well as subpoena any necessary records.

Mutua has served as Dean of the law school since 2008. He also teaches international human rights, international business transactions and international law at the school. In addition, he is a vice president of the American Society of International Law and a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a columnist for Daily Nation, Kenya’s leading newspaper.
