Reports indicate that at least two people died this morning when two trucks collided near Maanzoni on Mombasa road.The accident that occurred at about 8:00 Thursday morning happened a few meters from the Valhalla ranch of the late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo.
Elsewhere five people died on Wednesday evening when a lorry transporting potatoes careened off the road at Sachangwan.
While confirming the accident, Rift Valley Deputy Traffic officer, Peter Okiring, said three of those who died were in the lorry while another two –including a child - were hit while on the road side;
“We have information that there were three people in the lorry and all have died and two others including a child were by the road side who were hit by the lorry when it lost control,” he said.
There are however conflicting reports that the lorry actually had four occupants. Okiring said that the accident might have been caused by an error by the lorry driver;
“We suspect that the lorry driver might have engaged a free gear as it went downhill,” he said.
“Drivers should not risk their lives but should be really careful while driving on this stretch which is a hot spot,” he said.
The accident caused a heavy traffic snarl up that lifted later in the night
