Tourists stranded at Maasai Mara due to floods

Hundreds of tourists visiting the Maasai Mara Game Reserve were on Saturday stranded for more than three hours after Ngoswani River burst its bank.

Also stranded were passengers travelling between Narok and Sekenani.

Ngoswani Bridge, which connects Narok, Maasai Mara and several trading centres, was flooded, making the road impassable.

Many commuters avoided the Narok-Sekenani road and opted for Narok-Transmara route, which is longer.

Mr Shun Hon Hu, a tourist, said they would have to pay more for their stay in the country because they had ran behind schedule by more than a day.

Narok police had earlier warned tour operators and other travellers to the area to watch out for flooding rivers due to heavy rains.

“The disaster we experienced last week in which 10 people died was due to failure to warn drivers and commuters about the floods,” said Narok police boss Peterson Maelo.

Narok Wildlife Forum coordinator Nicholas ole Morero urged the government to repair the Ngoswani bridge urgently to ease transport in the area.

“The bridge endangers the lives of tourists who are important guests in the country,” he said.

Speaking to journalists at Siana Springs in Narok County yesterday, Mr Morero said most hotels in the region had incurred losses due to the floods.

“As a matter of priority, the government should address the issue immediately to save the tourism sector which earns the country a lot of revenue,” he said.

Meanwhile, nine bodies of the 10 people who died after a vehicle was swept away by raging floods in Narok South District last Tuesday have been recovered.

A team of Kenya Red Cross personnel, police, Kenya Wildlife Service rangers and residents removed two bodies from Entoroboni river on Wednesday, four on Saturday and three Sunday morning.

The victims were travelling from Ololulung’a town to Nkareta trading centre when the incident happened.
