A restaurant in Wichita that was planning a one night only, exotic dinner has decided to remove the lion meat on the menu after animal rights and social action groups protested. Taste & See, a restaurant on East Harry at the Office This complex between Hillside and Oliver, will serve dinner, with kangaroo, alpaca, water buffalo and crocodile among other meats.
Chef Jason Febres, said late Friday on his Facebook page: "I took a second look ... and I realized that yes, it can be a bit shocking and disturbing to some people .... I felt moved and did not want to offend anyone, so I decided to do the right thing and replace the lion meat.”
Febres sold out the dinner which caused an uproar among the animal groups, as the defenders of wildlife, Born Free USA and social action website Change.org, where they started a petition asking people to pressure Febres to cancel the dinner. He has no plans to do so and said that some information about the dinner was misleading.
Febres said his original plan was not to serve a wild African lion, but rather the meat of a lion that was raised on a farm. He also said he is not adding the lion meat or any other meat that appears at the $160 dinner, to his regular menu.
"It's just ignorance," he said of some of the information that is in e-mails about his event. He also stressed that the African lion is not an endangered species.
