President Mwai Kibaki is to spend his retirement playing golf, taking part in charity events and writing his autobiography.

According to his daughter Judy, the outgoing president is eager to resume playing golf, a sport he passionately pursued before becoming president in 2002.

“His going back to golfing. That is his favourite sport and he is very much prepared for that,” Judy said.

During a farewell luncheon by the Judiciary for the president on Wednesday, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga presented a set of golf clubs as a retirement gift to the president who confessed that he had not played golf for 12 years.

In an interview with Capital FM News on Friday, Judy said even though the president was leaving office he would still have quite a busy schedule.

“I think he’s got plenty to do. He has his books to write about the economy of Kenya and also his memoirs about his life in politics. He also has the Mwai Kibaki Foundation which he will invigorate and it will help a lot of young people with education and health issues,”Judy stated.

She said the family was looking forward to spending more time with the retiring president who was not always accessible due to his busy schedule.

She said that the family was happy that he was retiring after 50 years in politics.

Judy said: “We are going to have very many parties where we are going to call all his relatives and friends who have not seen him for a very long time. So we are actually in a celebratory mode.”

Judy said they were no immediate plans for the president to take a holiday and he would probably retreat to his Muthaiga, Othaya or, Mweiga homes after handing over to President-elect Uhuru Kenya on April 9.

Once he leaves office, President Kibaki will be awarded a Sh25 million send-off package as well as other retirement benefits.

The president will also be paid pension at the rate of 80 percent of his final salary of Sh700,000 meaning he would earn Sh560,000 a month. In addition he will be paid 40 percent of the current salary as entertainment allowance which translates to some Sh280,000.

The president already has a Sh500 million retirement home in Mweiga, on the Nyeri-Nyahuru highway.

The home has a swimming pool, jacuzzi and other modern facilities. The home has a guest house, main house and secretariat offices. There are also security houses adjacent and a canteen for the workers.

Well-manicured grounds, with a capacity of over 300 guests has also been established.

The home is easily accessible with a helipad.
