Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi has come under heat from Kenyans for filing a motion in parliament to remove the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) from office for slashing the legislators’ pay.
In filing the petition, Linturi argued the new pay was too low and that Parliament and not the SRC had power to cut the legislators’ pay. The current pay for MPs and Senators is Sh532,500 per month, most of will now be taxed. This is down from the Sh851,000 MPs in the 10th Parliament earned per month. Linturi isproposing raising their salary to Sh1 million, and tax-free.

Kenyans have taken to social media with some asking him and other legislators who are dissatisfied with the new salary to resign. Others have threatened to use the new provision in the new constitution to recall the "selfish" and greedy" legislators calling for an increase in their pay.
The move by Linturi comes two days after President Kenyatta called for the reduction in the public wage bill. The president said this during the state opening of parliament on Tuesday.
