A section of teachers have termed the move by Kenya National Teachers Union (Knut) chairman Wilson Sossion to support president elect Uhuru Kenyatta an abuse.
Led by Knut Kisumu East branch executive secretary Joshua Ogalo, the teachers said Knut is a trade union which should not participate in political matters.
“We want to make it clear that it is a constitutional right of all Kenyans to demand for justice when a need arise. CORD has a right to file a petition in a court of law,” Obado said in a statement.
He said teachers in the branch have rejected Sossion’s ‘views and opinion’ as null and void.
However, Sossion said he was implementing the union’s Annual Delegates Conference’s decision and called on those criticising the move to stop ethnicizing the situation.
He said the ADC resolved to support whoever is elected president in a meeting held in Kisumu last year.
“We are working as per the International Labour Organization’s convention and it is my business is to enforce the ADC resolutions and that is why we are supporting those who won at all levels regardless of parties. We are supporting the process and not individuals,” he said.
He told the branch to should stop enthnicizing the whole thing and called on members to work as per the union’s constitution and resolutions passed by the ADC.
“It is out of order for a branch to contradict the ADC resolutions passed,” he added.
However, Sossion pointed out that if the Supreme Court nullifies the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s decision to announce Uhuru the presidential race winner, Knut will work with any government elected in the fresh polls.
Sossion was quoted in The Standard on Monday, saying Knut respected CORD leader Raila Odinga’s constitutional right to file a petition challenging Uhuru’s election but it was wrong for the country to be in a perpetual election mood.
