Primary schools to shorten April holiday

April school holidays to be cut short so as to enable student cover syllabus in preparation for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam.
The Ministry of Education and The Kenya Primary Heads Association (Kepsha) are looking for ways to make up the lost time during nominations and the just concluded General Election.
“We are already in the process of registering this year’s candidates yet we are still behind in covering the syllabus. Kenya National Examinations Council will not look at what the students have covered but rather what should have been covered by the end of the year. We need to exhaust all options available to us in covering for the lost time including the April holiday,” said Kepsha chairman Joseph Karuga.
School heads are putting into consideration extending the teachers' working hours so as to cover lost time since Kenya National Examinations Council will not look at what the students have covered but rather what should have been covered by the end of the year,
“We want to see in the remaining time how much we can be able to do without overloading pupils. We have to consult with the teachers union. The International Labour Organisation protects teachers as workers. It is a question of willingness and persuading people to look at it as patriotic citizens,” said Karuga.
The members of the association are meeting at the Kenya Education Management Institute in Nairobi and will be submitting their final proposal to the Ministry of Education for approval.
