Kenya had the highest membership of the American Reference Centre (ARC) in January, making the country the biggest beneficiary of the virtual online library.

It has 10,165 members out of the 50,327 enrolled across the world with a majority being students from various institutions of higher learning across Kenya.

India came in second (9,802), followed by Pakistan (6,134), Uruguay (1,857), with Indonesia closing the top five category with 1,253 members.

The United States Department of State pumped in Sh86 million (US $1 million) into a virtual online library in 2011 under the name eLibraryUSA to all countries having diplomatic relations with the country.

The programme intends to provide users with a faster reliable pool of information from diverse fields.

US Embassy official Henry Mendelsohn attributed the high membership in Kenya to deep Internet penetration and distribution in the country.

“Many Kenyans today have easy access to the Internet and that’s something to be positive about,” he said.

“Kenyan students are thirsty for knowledge and have embraced the programme admirably,” he added eLibraryUSA membership is free and one can apply on the embassy’s website or apply from their offices at Gigiri, Nairobi.

“American Reference Centre is a research facility whose task is to provide updated information for Kenyan government officials, the Judiciary, journalists, educators, economists, and business and health professionals, “ said ARC Director, George Kamau.
