Industrialisation Minister Henry Kosgey has conceded defeat in his bid for senate seat in Nandi County even before official announcement of results by IEBC is made.

He conceded even as his son, Alexander Kosgey, was headed for a landslide win in Emgwen Constituency.

Kosgey appeared at the Nandi County Tallying Centre to offer his son a pat on the Tuesday morning before conceding his loss to his rival, youthful lawyer Stephen Sang.

By the time of filing this report, Kosgey junior who is in URP party garnered 29, 112 votes far much ahead of his closest competitor Joel Malel (NVP) who had 5,506 votes.

The minister took everyone by surprise when he arrived with a smile on his face at St. Peter’s Primary polling centre shortly before six in the morning.

Kosgey who was vying on ODM party ticket began by thanking those who voted for him and his son saying that “Nandi” had decided who should serve them.

“I congratulate the senate winner whom I have realized will obviously win. I concede defeat,” he said.

Stephen Sang of URP is likely to win senate seat as provisional results indicate that he is leading by a wide margin in nearly all polling centres.

Kosgey congratulated his son for earning a landslide victory and advised him to serve his constituents well.

“You have the capacity to serve your constituents because judging by the number of votes they cast for you, they believe in you,” he said as Kosgey junior’s supporters cheered.

He said that once the elections are over, work should start on a serious note so that development in the nation is fostered.

The minister jokingly told the press that retiring from politics was not on his mind saying “politicians don’t really retire”.

“It is easy for someone to say that he will retire but he cannot. You will be required at most times to contribute on the country’s governance which is actually politics,” he said amid laughter.

At the time Kosgey conceded defeat, results had not been released on county positions as counting of votes was still on-going in nearly all the polling centres in all constituencies of the county.

Kosgey junior thanked his supporters for turning up to vote for him in big numbers and promised that he will fulfill his pledges.
