80-Year-Old Man Becomes Dad

The adage that once beaten twice shy may have worked for 80-year-old Wilson Muwonge’s love life until he met Teddy.

Muwonge and one of his children at their home in Wakiso.

Muwonge, a resident of Serinya village, Uganda, had put relationships on hold after his wife fleeced him of money, claiming she was pregnant with his child.

“I was disappointed in women and decided to live alone. I never took relationships seriously,” he says.

A few years ago, however, Muwonge fell in love with Teddy Nasozi, 29 and the couple is living happily, despite their poor economic situation and age difference. The couple has three children.

Muwonge, commonly known as Abraham for having had children in his old age, praises Nasozi for giving him a chance to be a father and says he wants them to have more than 10 children.

On why he delayed to have children, Muwonge says he was disappointed by his ex.

Muwonge’s love life took a twist when his grandmother expressed concern about his single life and promised to get him a woman, an idea he embraced.

Before meeting Nasozi, Muwonge says he lived with another woman called Naiga for one year.

“Unfortunately, we were from the same clan and when she went to visit her parents, she did not come back,” he says.

In 2004, his grandmother approached her friend, Magdalena Nakandi, (Nasozi‘s auntie) and asked her to give her niece to Muwonge to marry.

Consequently, arrangements were made for Muwonge to visit Nasozi’s family and when he saw her, he fell in love.

Since Nasozi was a Born-Again Christian, she set conditions for Muwonge, one of which was getting ‘saved’ if he wanted to marry her, and Muwonge, who was a witchdoctor, willingly accepted.

For bride price, Muwonge bought a busuuti for Nasozi’s aunt, plus other gifts.

Nasozi says her parents, especially her mother, want them to organise a wedding, but they do not have the money.

“I will work hard and make sure that we hold our introduction this year and later a wedding,” she says.

At 80, Muwonge has become weak and is unable to work, but Nasozi says this will not stop her from achieving her dream of a proper wedding.

“I want to show the people who laughed at me for getting married to an old man that marriage is not all about age,” she says.

Nasozi says many of her relatives turned against her when she got married to an old man.

“They do not even invite me to family functions because I am poor,” she adds.
