Trans-Nzoia, Kenya: There was panic in Trans-Nzoia County after sand harvesters recovered three live bombs at Nyakinyua Bridge along Sabwani River.
The harvesters were scooping sand when they found the bombs and alerted area chief. The discovery made the sand harvesters to abandon the activity fearing danger.
“We were busy scooping sand from water when we netted the live explosives. It was scaring and we had to suspend the activity fearing for our lives,” said John Kamau.
Kitale OCPD Kimani Mitugo said they received information from area chief of the discovery and sent experts to collect them. “Though the explosives are worn out, they are live and we have asked the experts to detonate them,” said Mitugo.
Separately, an 83 year-old woman has succumbed to injuries inflicted on her by goons at Tulwet village in Trans-Nzoia County. Norah was attacked alongside her husband John Musundi last week by people suspected to have been hired to execute them over a land dispute.
The elderly woman was hacked on the head and seriously injured while her husband sustained cuts on his left hand. The attackers reportedly woke up the couple’s granddaughter pretending that they had received a call from the woman that her ailing husband had passed on.
Tension rising
It was after the girl opened the door that the three men armed with a panga and metal bar accessed the couple’s bedroom and unleashed terror on them. Mitugo confirmed the old woman had succumbed to injuries at Mediheals Hospital in Eldoret. The OCPD said one suspect had been arrested and is assisting police with investigation.
Meanwhile, tension is mounting in Kerio Valley following reports that armed cattle raiders are advancing towards the region. Even though Keiyo DC Moses Lilan dispelled the claims of attack in the region, residents are fearful. “At the moment there is no cause for alarm. Residents need not worry because we have beefed up security and enhanced day and night patrols to ensure business goes on,” the DC told The Standard on Monday. -The Standard
