A police officer was on Tuesday night shot and wounded in a confrontation with armed robbers in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

A gang of six had raided a restaurant along Jabavu Road in the area and robbed patrons before police were alerted.

The gangsters fired at the police officers as they approached the restaurant shooting one in the stomach.

Nairobi Area police boss Benson Kibue said the gang escaped with the loot they stole from the restaurant and no arrest has been made so far.

“The officer who was injured is in a stable condition in hospital,” said Kibue.

Meanwhile, a suspected thug was in the night lynched by a mob in a botched robbery on a matatu in Nairobi’s Githurai area.

The deceased was in the company of three others and tried to carjack a matatu when the passengers turned on them.

The other two who were armed with pistols managed to escape after jumping out while their accomplice was later lynched by the passengers.

Kibue said they have intensified police patrols in the city ahead of the March 4 elections.

Kibue has also summoned senior officers in the city for a meeting on Thursday to discuss the coming elections and crime in general.

Those summoned include all OCPDs, AP commanders, DCIOs and OCS’ in the 14 divisions in the city.

The deceased was ambushed and shot from a distance by gunmen who escaped on foot. Police say they are yet to know the motive of the attack but suspect it to be linked to the local clan rivalry. -Standard Media
