Over 3,000 families, which depended directly and indirectly on the Maasai Mara, lost their main source of income following the introduction of a smart-card system to pay for parking at the game reserve.

According to leaders in Narok, the most affected were the youth and they now want the Government to address the issue. The leaders identified unemployment and poor road infrastructure as some of the leading challenges facing the county.

According to Martin ole Kamwaro, there is an urgent need to address the issue of high unemployment rates in the county.

Mr Kamwaro said it was disheartening for parents to use millions of shillings to educate their children only to see them searching for jobs for years. Speaking at Ntulele market after being cleared to run for the Narok East parliamentary seat on a Wiper party ticket, Kamwaro noted that it was time for change.

Kamwaro promised to address the issue of poor roads, wheat and livestock farming if elected.

“We have the capability of supplying vegetables and livestock to other parts of the country, but the biggest problem we have is poor roads,” he said.

Kamwaro said Kenya lost a lot in the 2007/08 post-election violence and called on voters to shun those preaching hate.

“Never again should we allow Kenyans to shed blood in the name of politics and politicians should address issues and not policies,” he said.

Locals blamed poor leadership and corruption for the tens of problems facing Narok County.

According to Mzee Peter ole Nguruna, theirs was the richest county in the country but they have little to show for it.

“Narok Council is one of the richest in the country but we have the worst road system and dilapidated infrastructure,” he said. -Standard Digital
