A Japanese national was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi as he tried to smuggle out of the country three kilogrammes of heroin valued at Sh24.9 million.
The man was headed to Japan through Abu Dhabi when he was intercepted by airport police.
After his arrest, he led police to a city restaurant where two other suspects, a Kenyan and a Ghanaian were arrested.
Airport deputy CID boss Joseph Ng’ang’a said the Kenyan and Ghanaian were the suppliers of the drugs, which were found under the Japanese’s traveling suitcase.
Police suspect there are large quantities of the drugs in the country given the seizures that have been made in the past few weeks.
Last week three people including two foreigners were arrested and more than 14 kilogrammes of heroin valued at about Sh50 million recovered from them at a residence in Runda, Nairobi.
The drugs are suspected to have originated from Tanzania and were headed for United Kingdom, police said. The drugs were packed in 14 polythene bags and hidden under the car seats.
Two weeks ago four people including two Kenyan women were arrested with four kilogrammes of heroin valued at Sh14 million from a house in Kitsuru area, Nairobi.
Head of the Special Crime Prevention Unit Said Kiprotich said they suspect the drug traffickers are trying to use the Kenyan routes to transport their drugs.
Police believe most of the drugs in circulation in the country originate Tanzania and the traffickers use the airport or roads in bringing them. - The Standard
