Jubilee Alliance leaders took on their counterparts in Cord over the threats directed at Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.
Presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto insisted that Cord leaders owed Kenyans an explanation over the threats and embarrassment that the CJ was subjected to by a junior Immigration officer at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Mr Ruto singled out Immigration minister Otieno Kajwang’ whom he said owed Kenyans an explanation over the airport incident.
“Our brothers in the Cord alliance should say what they know about the threats on the CJ. We in Jubilee reject such threats. They are barbaric, primitive and something of the past,” Mr Ruto told a rally at Nanyuki’s Central Park in Laikipia before heading to Nyandarua.
But the two leaders did not demand an explanation on the role of the head of the civil service Francis Kimemia whom Dr Mutunga mentioned as the person the Immigration officer at the airport referred to as demanding that the CJ should have sought clearance to travel.
Mr Maina Njenga who was a former leader of the Mungiki is in Mkenya Solidarity Movement party which has declared support for Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Cord.
Mr Njenga has often distanced himself from the outlawed sect.
Mr Ruto said Jubilee does not believe in threats either directed on its leaders, the Judiciary or anybody in or outside the country.
“Mr Kajwang should also explain the issues he has with the CJ since he is the minister in charge of Immigration. It’s unfortunate that some people do not know that we have a new Constitution,” he said.
Mr Kenyatta said the issues raised by the CJ should be investigated fast and thoroughly.
“Kenyans are now wiser and they are watching these people keenly. We know they want to dedicate the remaining period spreading propaganda to confuse voters after their attempts to bar us from contesting presidency failed,” Mr Kenyatta said, adding no amount of propaganda from would distract Jubilee.
