How Polio workers escaped Kano Massacre

On Friday, gunmen attacked two health centres in Kano and in the spate of an hour, killed many including about 9 female polio vaccinators but what most people did not know is that the few health workers who survived the attack cheated death by lying down on the floor and pretending to have been killed.

This was part of the revelations made by survivors who are currently recuperating at the Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital and the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano at the weekend.

Reports we are monitoring indicate that the gunmen did not only shoot the health workers, but also set fire on them to ensure no survivors were left.

Although the survivors were too traumatised to speak, Khadijah, a 22-year-old Economics graduate of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, said they all lay still as the gunmen doused the place with Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and set fire to ensure that there were no survivors.

This is the first time health workers in Kano have been so hounded.
