One of the most popular online forums for Kenyans, including those in the diaspora has been shut down. Mashada.com gotshut down shortly after it was identified by the Kenyan government on January 10, 2013 as one of the websites being used by Kenyans to spread hate speech. Kenyans, including those mentioned in the government list, have accused thegovernment of trying to stifle freedom of speech.

Mashada, which has been online since around 1999, is one of the oldest online platforms that Kenyans have been using to discuss a diverse range of topics including politics, relationships, gossip, sports and entertainment. It was especially popular before social networking sites such as facebook and twitter came into existence.

The site was also temporarily shut down during the post election violence that followed the 2007 elections after users who supported the different political parties used it to trade heated words that at times turned tribal. It was re-opened shortly afterwards after the website owner introduced moderation to curb spreading of inappropriate content.

No word yet on when or if the site will be back online.
