Starehe MP Dr. Bishop Margaret Wanjiru may be
locked out of Nairobi gubernatorial race for lack of academic credentials.
On Thursday, the Commission
of Higher Education rejected her education qualifications, saying that Vineyard
Harvester Bible College in the US is not a recognised institution in Kenya.
As a result, Bishop Wanjiru
who is also the Assistant Minister of Housing may be barred from contesting for
the Nairobi Governor seat in March polls as she is not considered a graduate.
According to Independent Electoral
and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) laws, all candidates vying for Governor must
be holders of a degree from a University recognised in Kenya.
Wanjiru, who is also ODM’s
key figure in Nairobi, received a degree in Theology from Vineyard Harvester Bible
College in July 13 2003.
The Commission for Higher Education
wrote to Wanjiru on Wednesday advising her that the degrees awarded by the
institution are not recognised in Kenya.
This comes as welcome news
to former Mumias Sugar CEO Dr Evans Kidero and former Nairobi Town Clerk Philip
Kisia who have expressed interest for the Nairobi Governor’s seat on an ODM
ticket.
