The deputy officer in charge of the main Garissa prison was among those killed in the incident that occurred at 7 30 pm at the Dunes hotel. Three men and one woman were also killed.
According to witnesses three assailants who were dressed in Somali regalia ordered for tea before drawing a pistol which they used in the killings .
The three injured victims were taken to Garissa General Hospital with gun serious wounds. Garissa County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim said they have information that the attackers were of Somali origins and they left in a Probox after the incident. The county boss however said that motive of the killings is still unknown.
Garissa town has witnessed a series of grenade and gun attacks by people believed to be members of the terrorist group Al shabaab.
Three KDF soldiers were murdered in a similar incident in November last year. The incident sparked violence and riots in which several businesses and property were destroyed.
