Chinese Hospital Opens 'Séx Ward' For Couples To Make Love, Babies

According to a 2011 survey, Chinese adults have sex 122 times a year, higher than the global average of 103, while 64.5% of those surveyed say were satisfied with their séx lives

Though these figures are above average, the infertility rate has also gone up. One in every 10 couples is unable to conceive and over 10 million couples need assisted reproductive technology, which has a 40% success rate.

To tackle the problem, Wuhan's Songziniao Hospital has set up a séx ward—referred to as "The Second Wedding Chamber" by medical staff—to help infertile couples conceive.

The dimly-lit room, decorated in red, purple and pink, is fully furnished with erotica, porn, sex toys, role playing costumes, a round electric bed and sofa. Designed to encourage pregnancy by inspiring séxual passion, there are also experts to provide guidance to couples.

The 50 square metre ward—about half a badminton court—is rented out at 580 yuan (RM280) per session. "Getting pregnant is not as easy as you've seen on TV. Many people don't know it's a technical job," said hospital president Wang Shengdong. "The life span of an egg is just 12 hours while a sperm only lives up to five days."

Couples are monitored for three months to check on their health and fertility chances before the hospital identifies the right time for them to conceive and send them to the séx ward.

The "séx ward" is located in the Songziniao hospital in Wuhan, Hubei province. The rooms in the ward come fully equipped with red lamps, adjustable double beds, fluffy lamps and plush sofas - all to create a romantic atmosphere to inspire passion in patients trying for a baby.

The VIP rooms of 50 square metres each have all the necessary furniture and tools for successful séx, with even pictures illustrating the human genital structures, sséx positions and customs.

What's more, there are séx videos on hand, along with various role-playing costumes and sex toys available on request. And if all the above fail to work, you can call a professional "séx-pert" to come to your bedside to advise you on what you are doing wrong and what could be improved upon.

The séx-pert can also provide biological education to those lacking in anatomical knowledge.

According the architect of the special patient ward, the cost for decoration and furniture for each ward is up to 200,000 renminbi (S$39,475).

Despite the hefty price, the price tag for a night's stay at the ward is a modest 880 renminbi (S$173) after a discount.

The purpose of establishing the "Second Nuptial Chamber" ward was to provide a comfortable and appropriate environment to inspire sexual passion for infertile couples, said the president of the hospital Wang Shengdong.
