Boniface Mwangi Receives Kshs. 3.4M Prize with His Family

Announced last September, award-winning photojournalist, Boniface Mwangi, finally received his award as one of this year's Prince Claus laureates. The activist becomes the youngest person to ever receive the accolade. Mwangi was handed the award, which comes with a €25,000 (about Kshs. 3.45 million) prize, yesterday at the Dutch Embassy.

According to the Fund: "Boniface Mwangi is awarded for his evocative photographs on challenging social issues; for creating a powerful new approach to processes of community and communal self-reflection and dialogue; for highlighting the importance of direct grassroots interaction to achieve post-conflict reconciliation; and for his brave efforts to reduce violence and build peace through culture."

The Principal Laureate for 2012 was Eloísa Cartonera from Argentina. Besides Mwangi, the other recipients were Sami Ben Gharbia (Tunisia), Habiba Djahnine (Algeria), Yassin al Haj Saleh (Syria), Widad Kawar (Jordan), Teresa Margolles (Mexico), Phare Ponleu Selpak (Cambodia), Ian Randle (Jamaica), Maung Thura alias Zarganar (Burma) and Maxamed Ibraahim Warsame alias Hadraawi (Somalia) who were handed the awards in their respective countries. - Ghafla
