Why Ngilu Bolted Out of Raila-Kalonzo Alliance

Water minister Charity Ngilu is said to have opted out of the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (Cord) after it emerged that her Narc party will have to forego its right to field candidates.

The agreement between Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Trade minister Moses Wetangula gives ODM, Wiper and Ford Kenya parties’ exclusive rights to field candidates in their strongholds.

Ngilu is said to be contemplating returning to Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta’s fold as she seeks ways of remaining relevant in the emerging political realignments.

Her party’s stronghold remains in Ukambani where the Cord alliance has patented to VP Kalonzo’s Wiper.

“Waziri cannot belong to an alliance where neither her nor the Narc party are assigned any role, she is rethinking her stand,” the Water minister’s spokesman Martin Masai said.

Mr Masai said Ngilu was finding it difficult to work with the Cord alliance especially as the rights to fielding candidates in Ukambani, her home turf, have been given to another party.

The Cord alliance deal also implies that Ngilu cannot be given the alliance’s nod to contest the Kitui senate seat, which is also being eyed by Kalonzo’s confidant and Mwingi South MP David Musila.

Musila played an instrumental role in bringing together Raila and Kalonzo, with PM and VP expected to ‘reward’ him for the efforts.

Apart from their perennial rivalry between Ngilu and Kalonzo in Ukambani, Raila allies are uncomfortable with her short-lived dalliance with Uhuru.
